Gareth, our BMW Catalog Manager, explains the switch from 5w-30 (LL-01) to 0w-30 (LL-01FE) oil. The new 0w-30 "FE" product should better protect your engine on cold starts and offer increased fuel economy. If you're unfamiliar with engine oil designations, the first number "0w" defines how well the oil flows (viscosity) when cold.
0w30 vs 0w40 Subaru. For all Subaru engines, oil in the range of 0w20 to 5w30 is often suggested. The 0w30 and 0w40 motor oils go unmentioned. You can, however, use 0w30 motor oil under freezing conditions. 0w40 motor oil, on the other hand, is suitable for start-ups in cold weather and can be used in harsh conditions.
For countries without those regs, like Australia, the manual for the same engine specifies MANY weights without the message to switch back. From 0w-20 to 0w-16 one gets about 1% better mileage. It took a while to engineer the oil, but it is rated for the same service. 1% might amount to about 0.3 miles/gal more.
Posts: 5,062. 0w20 vs 5w20 vs 10w30 Engine Oil Viscosity. For the last 30-40 years I have always used 10W30 oil in my vehicles. Now my 2017 Jeep Wrangler says to use 5W20 and the 2019 Honda Ridgeline says 0W20 engine oil. Usually the Manuals will give a spread of heat ranges with various engine oil weights but not on these 2 vehicles.
Nov 7, 2020. #5. The 4.2 V6 in my 07 F150 was built 1997-2008. In all those years of production the tolerances and clearances had NEVER changed. Up until 1999 the spec'd oil was 5W30. In 2000 Ford spec'd 5W20 for CAFE reasons ONLY. In the 159K miles on my engine since new I have used 5W30 about 90% of the time.
Temperature range comparison Additional Motor Oil References Comparison of the two: Within the engine oil world, viscosity, as the most prominent characteristic, is notated with a term "XW-XX". The digit preceding W describes the oil flow at 0 degree Fahrenheit (-17.8 degree Celsius). W stands for winter.
